Newcastle vs West Ham: Hammers to maintain Euro vision

Kick-off: 1230, 17/04/2021

Stadium: St James’ Park

TV: Sky Sports

Newcastle and West Ham both enjoyed important wins last weekend and now meet at St James’ Park in a crucial game at both ends of the Premier League table.

A 2-1 victory at Burnley was a huge boost for Newcastle’s survival hopes while West Ham held on for a 3-2 win against fellow Champions League hopefuls Leicester.

The Hammers have won more than half of their league games during a superb season so far and backing them at evens is an easy choice for our first Newcastle vs West Ham prediction.

A Look At Newcastle United’s Betting Odds

Newcastle had gone seven matches without a win prior to their trip to Turf Moor and that run looked set to continue when they went behind in the first half.

They were outplayed for almost an hour but the game changed when Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson were brought off the bench in the 57th minute.

Top scorer Wilson had missed seven games with a hamstring problem while Saint-Maximin only returned from injury as a substitute the previous week, and the attacking duo quickly showed the Magpies what they have been missing.

Within two minutes, Saint-Maximin teed up Jacob Murphy’s equaliser and five minutes later he ran from the halfway line to score what proved to be the winner himself.

Newcastle’s only clean sheet in the last 10 matches came against struggling West Brom, though, so an away win and both teams to score looks good value at 31/10 in the Newcastle vs West Ham odds.

Last Newcastle line-up: Dubravka, Clark, Dummett, Fernandez, Shelvey, Ritchie, Murphy, Almiron, Longstaff, Joelinton, Gayle.

Ryan Fraser will miss out once again with a groin problem, joining defenders Jamaal Lascelles (foot) and Fabian Schar (knee) and fellow midfielder Isaac Hayden (also knee) on the casualty list.

A Look at West Ham United’s Betting Odds

West Ham’s hopes of a top-four finish improved after their 3-2 victory over Leicester, which means they are now just a point behind the third-placed Foxes.

Jesse Lingard scored twice and Jarrod Bowen added the third before Leicester hit back through Kelechi Iheanacho’s double and the Hammers survived a late scare when a last-gasp Wesley Fofana header flew wide.

There is a growing sense that West Ham can secure an improbable place in the Champions League next season but midfielder Tomas Soucek said: “It is still hard to say. We cannot count how many games are left and how many points we need.

“We have to prepare for the next game, for Newcastle, and we have to be happy that we have won, so we can be in the same way, with the same spirit, and want to take three points from the next game.

“The Champions League seems nice but it is too far from now. We need to prepare for the next game not thinking about this position.

“It is great that we are controlling the games and the table, but like I said, now it is Newcastle and I hope we will play a similar way in terms of being offensive.”

Lingard’s brace against Leicester means no Premier League player has scored more goals since his debut for West Ham.

The on-loan Manchester United midfielder has scored eight times in nine games and he is now only one goal away from being West Ham’s top scorer this season despite only arriving in January.

Let’s take 10/3 for Lingard to open the scoring as the last of our Newcastle vs West Ham betting tips.

Last West Ham line-up: Fabianski, Cresswell, Coufal, Dawson, Diop, Masuaku, Lingard, Noble, Fornals, Soucek, Bowen.

West Ham hope Aaron Cresswell recovers from the knock he sustained against Leicester last weekend. Midfielder Declan Rice and striker Michail Antonio remain out with respective knee and hamstring injuries.
