After making a good start to their rebuilding job, we’ve been tracking the Man Utd transfer news to assess who will be the next top targets.
Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Daniel James and Odion Ighalo have all proved shrewd buys, with more money set to be spent in the summer window.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still seems keen to offload unwanted high earners and these are the potential replacements we believe he would like to bring to Old Trafford:
The 19-year-old winger was part of England’s Under-17 World Cup-winning team in 2017 and has already secured 11 international caps for the Three Lions’ senior side. Sancho is familiar with Manchester, having spent two years as a trainee with neighbours City before moving to Borussia Dortmund for £8million due to a lack of opportunities. Signed a new £190,000-a-week deal with the Bundesliga outfit last summer, but Dortmund have a history of selling on when the price is right.
Helped Aston Villa to gain promotion from the Championship and has continued to impress as captain in the Premier League. One of his seven top-flight goals was a stunning strike in Villa’s December 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, with the United faithful clearly taken by Grealish’s positive attitude and willingness to orchestrate attacking moves. At 24, this mercurial talent looks tailor-made to move on to a bigger stage and Villa going straight back down may force him to jump ship.
Much will depend on whether Paul Pogba stays or goes in terms of United’s midfield targets, but Maddison fits the profile of a young British player on the upgrade, which Solskjaer is using as a blueprint for success. The 23-year-old caught the eye of several clubs when playing for Norwich and his star has continued to rise following a £20m switch to Leicester. Pictures of Maddison wearing a United kit as a youngster have fuelled speculation of him joining boyhood Red Devils fans Maguire, Wan-Bissaka and Ighalo at Old Trafford.
Talk of a move for Tottenham talisman Harry Kane is a touch fanciful in our book and Jimenez would represent a much more realistic target to bolster a forward line lacking strength in depth. Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial appear better attacking from out wide and Mason Greenwood is still developing, so 28-year-old Jimenez would be a useful addition. The powerful 6ft 3in Mexico international has excelled in the Premier League for Wolves, but is reportedly keen on joining a higher-profile club at this stage of his career.
Maguire and Wan-Bissaka have helped to shore up United’s defence, along with Luke Shaw’s return to top form, but this is still an area that needs addressing. Victor Lindelof is a solid partner for Maguire in European games, so a big-money buy may not be needed, but Eric Bailly’s injury problems mean a physical force is required for back-up duties, especially with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo out of favour. Tarkowski is another boyhood United supporter who has done a sterling job at the back for Burnley.
