Canada were one of the most impressive teams during the group stage of the CONCACAF Gold Cup and may feel aggrieved to be seen as the underdogs for their quarter-final in the eyes of the bookmakers.
The Reds enjoyed two comfortable victories before a narrow loss against the USA denied them top spot in their group, although it should be noted Costa Rica were one of only two teams to progress with three wins out of three.
We still think there is a lot to like about this Canada team and we’re backing them to go through at 7/5 for our opening Costa Rica vs Canada prediction.
A Look At Costa Rica’s Betting Odds
Costa Rica have never won the Gold Cup but are now dreaming of a first title, or at least a run to the final for the first time since 2002.
Their campaign began with a 3-1 win against 10-man Guadeloupe but they were made to work harder by Suriname, who took the lead early in the second half but Costa Rica quickly hit back to secure a 2-1 victory.
The Ticos then scored with their only shot on target to earn a 1-0 win against Jamaica as they topped Group C but we’re not sure their performances have been as impressive as their results.
Former Fulham player Bryan Ruiz grabbed the only goal against Jamaica but his best days are behind him at the age of 35 while friendly defeats against Mexico (1-0) and the United States (4-0) earlier this year highlighted the team’s limitations.
A close game looks likely but we think the younger North Americans could have more energy in the latter stages and Draw HT/Canada FT catches the eye at 11/2 in the Costa Rica vs Canada odds.
A Look At Canada’s Betting Odds
The goals flowed for Canada at the start of the Gold Cup as they put four past both Martinique and Haiti.
A defensive lapse saw them concede after just 20 seconds against the USA, though, and despite that being the only shot on target they faced, the damage had been done and Canada suffered a 1-0 defeat despite dominating for long periods.
Perhaps of more significance was the loss of striker Ayo Akinola, who has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament having been a useful option off the bench, while Cyle Larin also suffered a leg injury.
Canada will, however, be boosted by the return of key midfielder Stephen Eustaquio so it is important they make a better start having trailed inside the first 10 minutes in two of their three games.
This has the potential to be an exciting contest between two teams that are usually well matched so let’s back either side to come from behind to win at 15/2 for our final Costa Rica vs Canada prediction.
COSTA RICA 1-0 Jamaica – Bryan Ruiz
United States 1-0 CANADA
Head-to-head: Costa Rica 1-1 Canada, Canada 0-0 Costa Rica, Canada 0-1 Costa Rica, Costa Rica 2-2 Canada
